Cuckoo Callay | Newtown
Cuckoo Callay is a small quirky cafe that is located just outside of Newtown station. We have only heard great things about this cafe but never got around to trying it. We finally cleared our day and made the efforts to travel to Newtown.. it was totally worth it.
The artwork throughout the cafe really screams "hipster"! This theme continued through to their take-away coffee cups as well. We loved how much detail there is in this pattern, and the vibrant pink is definitely eye popping as it contrasts with the black and white! The hipster theme is even further continued with their furniture, table settings and table decorations. You really feel welcomed in this cafe right from the start!
Rolling with my Homies
Double Smoked Bacon, Bacon Sausage, Gruyere, Beetroot & Red Onion Marmalade, Russian dressing served with a 63° egg on brioche
We love our bacon so when I noticed this on the menu, my eyes lit up! I would have to say though, this burger was something special. It had a perfect balance of salty and sweet flavours throughout, the saltiness of the bacon and pork sausage and the sweetness of the brioche bun and the beetroot and red onion marmalade. It was that perfect balance which was further enjoyed with a 63° egg, generously dispersing throughout my meal. The only negative about this burger was that the rocket felt out of place and would possibly be better if it was spinach instead.
Porked
Pressed pork, chargrilled broccolini, manchego and mustard sauce and a 63° egg on sourdough
Cuckoo Callay was OVERLY-generous with the mustard sauce, which was great because the sauce made this dish shine. Without the sauce soaking throughout the sourdough and the pressed pork, the dish would have been dry otherwise. Once again that 63° egg just topped off this dish with the oozing egg yolk, it was just right. I would return just for the mustard sauce! Can we buy this in a bottle?
Cappuccino and Chai Latte
We also ordered a couple of drinks to finish the meal. Matt enjoyed his cappuccino and I had a nice chai latte - although Bourke Street Bakery still remains our go-to place for chai lattes!
(yes, we know BSB's chai latte is for people with a sweet tooth)
