Bang Bang Izakaya Bar | Darling Square (Steam Mill Lane)
If you are reminiscing Japan or are planning to visit, Bang Bang Izakaya in Steam Mill Lane/Darling Square is the closest experience you will ever have in Sydney. It's definitely a hidden gem! You will miss it as you enter through a garage like entrance - we're talking about bullet sprayed roller doors! As you walk in, there's a lot to take in! You can see neon lit open kitchen and bar, vending machine wall and a glass karaoke box! If that sounds like too much for you, they have a hidden tatami room (traditional Japanese style dining room) at the back.
We were browsing the menu and noted the signature dishes at Bang Bang Izakaya Bar (they are marked with a ninja star) and The Bang Bang Tebasaki caught our attention. It's their signature starter - twice fried chicken wings with their legendary peppery soy glaze. They give you gloves to eat the sticky, flavourful wings.
Omakase
The beautiful nigiri were served to our table and each one was explained in detail. We aren't usually a fan of raw food (we prefer grilled/half cooked) but Matt surprisingly wanted to order this. We tried a few nigiri which were fresh and had the perfect amount of rice ball.
Lava Omurice
The omurice looked so different to their display model outside - we were slightly disappointed. It tasted mediocre but wasn't bad. We found an amazing omurice place in Sydney (which dare we say is better than Kichi Kichi in Kyoto). Hit us up if you want to know where that is :) For those who don't know what omurice is, it's a fluffy Japanese omelette on tomato sauce fried rice and a homemade sauce/gravy.
Miso Pudding
The miso pudding from Bang Bang Izakaya Bar was their only dessert (as we visited within 2 weeks of their opening) and it tasted like a salted caramel brulee. It was an interesting dessert but we enjoyed the taste. The miso caramel wasn't too strong and the flavours complimented each other so well.
