Kid Kyoto | Sydney CBD

We had an intimate dining experience at Kid Kyoto right before our Melbourne Trip. This really set the mood for us to go on another holiday back to Japan! Matt once said he would love to retire and live in Japan. We've been to Japan a few times now and absolutely love the food, culture and people. Kid Kyoto provides you with an upper class vibe yet contrasted with the street food vibe as you see the wok's fire up! We were seated near the kitchen and could smell and see the food being served to customers. For those of you who don't know, Kid Kyoto is tucked away on Bridge Lane and serves modern Japanese tapas style small plates. The menu is limited but for good reasons - they have 9 categories on the menu; Izakaya Intro, Yakitori, Bao, Raw & Unplugged, Nigiri Sushi, Main Stage, Back Up, Encore and Omakase.

Cocktails: 'High' Ball & Dry (left) & Inn Bloom (right)
Whenever Matt sees High Ball on the menu, you know he would be ordering it. The High Ball & Dry cocktail was described with three words - smoky, herbaceous and dry. The mix was with Suntory Kakubin, honey-ginger syrup, yuzu bitters & soda. I on the other hand love sweet cocktails. Actually, anything sweet tickles my taste buds and I definitely didn't regret my choice. The Inn Bloom was described as floral, fruity and acidity. It was made with Beefeater gin, sake, shiso, grapefruit, yuzu, strawberry & a thyme shrub.

Gyoza
The dumplings had bold flavour and I loved the jam-like sauce at the bottom. It had a slightly sweet taste so complemented the strong flavour from the dumpling filling. When flavours are strong, you always need something acidic to break it up and that's where the pickles on the side comes in. The flavours just explode in your mouth.

Chicken Karaage Bao
Words cannot express how amazing the chicken karaage bao was for me. It's one of the best bao I've ever had. The bao was soft and fluffy, the chicken was perfectly cooked and the sauce was just to die for - no wonder why it's one of the popular dishes at Kid Kyoto. As mentioned earlier, we were seated near the kitchen and all we could hear was 1 x Chicken Bao, 1 x Chicken Bao, 1 x Chicken Bao and you get the rest. Glad we tried this and we would highly recommend it.

Okonomiyaki
We have tried many types of okonomiyaki ranging from traditional to modernised ones. We weren't quite sure what to expect when we ordered okonomiyaki at Kid Kyoto. When it arrived at our table, we noticed it wasn't served as a full pancake but rather, a folded one. We enjoyed the flavour and bite sized ingredients within the pancake. The sauce was tangy, sweet and salty at the same time.

Udon
We saw flames and could feel the passion from chefs as we sneakily peaked into the kitchen. The flavour was odd with the udon. To us, the flavours tasted like a combination of Japanese and Mexican sauce and spices. It tasted like a taco or similar spices yet, crossed with soy and Asian flavours. It was odd but we thoroughly enjoyed it.
