Umi Sushi | Haymarket

If you're thinking Umi Sushi sounds familiar than you've probably been to one of their location in Darling Quarter, Town Hall or Haymarket. We had a quick tour around their Haymarket location and saw live seafood in fish tanks, experienced chef's preparing sashimi, a gorgeous bar and a private dining room. If you are interested in dining here, feel free to make a booking. Click here to book your experience at Umi Sushi

Sashimi Boat
When the sashimi boat arrived at our table, we were shocked. It was monstrous yet so calming/mesmerising to watch when water was poured over the dry ice. If you order enough nigiri or sashimi, you can request it to be placed on a boat as well. It could be great for a special occasion or surprise! We had salmon belly, tuna, king fish, scallops, sea urchin, oysters and foie gras nigiri. All were prepared with so much love and care by talented chefs! I placed a few sea urchin on seaweed sheets and let myself enjoy the creaminess and texture from each bite.

Foie Gras Nigiri
We had the controversial Foie Gras (french for fat liver). It's a luxury food product made of liver from duck that has been specially fattened. The force-feeding process is frowned upon but as a result, the flavour is rich and buttery. We would've never thought of pairing foie gras with rice, seaweed and a little gold leaf.

Smoked Salmon Sashimi
If you are a fan of Beauty and the Beast, you would love the smoked salmon sashimi. If you can't find it on their menu, just show them this blog post. This was served in a smoked glass jar (like the enchanted rose in Beauty and the Beast) and you can open the lid when you're ready. You can smell the smokey flavour which can come across quite strong but the smokey taste from the salmon was subtle.

Kingfish Sashimi
We had beautifully prepared kingfish sashimi which was fresh and fun to eat - it's paper thin so have fun picking it up with chopsticks! Everything about Japanese food comes down to respect; which part of the fish to use, how to cook the fish, what to pair it with and how everything tastes as a whole.

Tempura Uni Sea Urchin
This reminded me of an experience we had by the river in Fukuoka. We ordered a few dishes from Yatai stalls and had no idea what we were ordering. Turns out we ordered tempura fish egg wrapped in shiso leaf which tasted delicious. The tempura uni sea urchin from Umi Sushi was quite similar. If you are missing Japan, this is one way to bring back those memories.

Deep Fried Oyster
I've had deep fried oyster before but not with this magical sauce. From memory, I think it was a plum sauce which was sweet, tangy and salty. This deep fried oyster had all types of flavours and textures; crunchy on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside.

Chili Quail
We were surprised to know that Umi Sushi serves a variety of food and not just seafood/sushi. The next item that came to our table was this quail. My favourite type of quail is from Thai restaurants. They taste amazing, juicy, oily and oh so delicious. Unfortunately, the quail was quite dry but had a small kick.

Wagyu Beef and Ox Tongue
Ox Tongue is quite normal for people but not for us. We've never been brave enough to try Ox Tongue, the closest I've been is taking a bite and spitting it back out. It's way too crunchy and chewy for my liking - lucky Nessy Easter was there to help! The Wagyu beef on the otherhand was perfectly cooked, somewhat rested and flavourful.

Japanese Cheesecake
Light, fluffy and subtly sweet are four words to describe this cheesecake. It was a great dessert to end the night (considering we had a feast). We thoroughly enjoyed this cheesecake but our favourite Japanese cheesecake was in Fukuoka.
