Masala Theory | Surry Hills

Masala Theory is our favourite Indian Restaurant encapsulating antiquity and modernity; located right in the heart of Surry Hills. Masala Theory is your escape to India from the decor, starters, mains, dessert, drinks and even the bathroom! Don't forget to take a snap of the neon pink bicycle (which you can't miss) on your way out!

Rajbhog Thali
The Rajbhog Thali is a set royal round platter with Masala Theory's top curries, appetizers, rice, dessert, naan bread and raita. The set platter applies to the whole table and it has a mixture of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian curries. Lets see if I can remember the delicious curries we had (in order of preference).
  • #1 Chicken Masala - Chicken curry inspired from village style spice mix
  • #2 Moilee Curry Tofu - Tandoori Tofu in a South Indian style moilee curry in coconut milk
  • #3 Lamb Curry - Hearty lamb curry in Indian flavour with coriander and almond puree base
  • #4 Eggplant Bharta - Smoked eggplant mashed with onion, tomatoes, chillies and masala
  • #5 Chole Bhatura - A hearty bowl of spiced chickpeas
  • Classic Chicken Tikka (pictured below) - Chicken marinated in tandoori spices, served with mint chutney and chillies. This is not included in the royal platter.
Their famous dessert, the Sukhdi was on the royal platter and by far, the best Indian dessert we've ever tasted. It was soft, crumbly and melt in your mouth. I thought it was some sort of cheese but the texture is made of jaggery and wheat flour churned in ghee - an authentic Gujarati Sweet.
